Dr Wilson is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at University College Dublin (UCD), and is also the Director of the MA in Philosophy of Mind and Embodied Cognition, and Co-Director of the UCD interdisciplinary Cognitive Science programme, as well as being a member of ADAPT, the world-leading Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology. His work concerns the metaphysics and epistemology of perceptual experience; however, he is also interested in the philosophy of psychology and the cognitive sciences, the metaphysics of time and temporal passage, and the work of Scottish Enlightenment philosopher Thomas Reid, amongst other subjects.
Dr Wilson completed his PhD in the philosophy of mind and perception at the University of Warwick in 2013, after which he went on to hold a Postdoctoral Research Associate position at the University of Glasgow from 2014 until 2017 on the Rethinking the Senses: Uniting the Philosophy and Neuroscience of Perception project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council. From 2019 to 2023, he held a Postdoctoral Fellowship on the Perceiving Representations: A Study of Structural Commonalities between Language, Pictures, and Music project at the University of Oslo. He has supervised various undergraduate, Master’s and PhD projects on the philosophy of perception, temporal experience, personal identity, and sense of self, and teaches a number of modules to undergraduate students throughout the year.
Outside of his philosophy research, Dr Wilson has previously worked as a software designer and computer programmer, which fuels his interest in technology and AI. He is also a trained studio and live sound engineer, and enjoys listening to and playing music, photography, film, travel, and exploring the Irish countryside in his downtime.
